This link was excellent and the information fascinating. hyperbolic discounting in short means that people opt for instant gratification.

I think whatever the opposite of this is also very true: people opt to delay pain, rather than face it now (maybe that is actually the same thing?).

In most pay-now/pay-later situations, the less-experienced players will almost always lean toward the pay later...not make the loose hit or the slot or leave the blot that might be a far better or necessary risk now in order to avoid the immediate threat of loss. Virtually every beginner and intermediate student I have taught will not hit loose in the inner board in a close race when it is clear to do so, for example. They will almost always let the opponent play an even race or even when winning the race and holding the cube instead of hitting which provides far greater winning odds. Until they become more skilled and practiced in this area, I even given them a rule of thumb: "if you are on the fence and you opponent has the cube, you are probably better off hitting." Of course, the more skilled and experienced, the less this is true and the more the player should rely on the data rather than dealing with his feelings and fear.
