Without getting to technical and preachy. I would recommend to go through the entire book without the aid of XG giving you the best play or roll outs. Playing the positions out should be fine, before you look at the answers. Draw your own conclusions and only then check the answers.
If you are really curious after going through both volumes, pick up Jeremy Bagai's - "Classical Backgammon Revisited" to see his updates.
It took me almost a year to go through both volumes with a friend. We took the opportunity to practice pip counting, finding candidate moves and game plans. We treated it as a competition 2-3 times a week. Whomever got more answers wrong paid for dinner or coffee.
As for your query about cutting edge BG Literature: try Mary Hickey and Marty Storer's "What's Your Game Plan".
Best of Luck in your endeavour to get better!!
