The resurgance of backgammon

Shortly after I got into the game there were a couple of major tournaments in Chicago. There were guys playing in these events wearing silk suits (remember those?), playing for anywhere from $100 to $500 a point. I saw one game where Max had Freddie Chamanara stuck 100 points at $100s, Max was holding an 8-cube, and things weren't looking good. Freddie says: "I think I backgammon you!" And Joel Rettew, Max's backer, says: "Eight to one you don't, for a thousand." Freddie takes the bet, Max gets BG'd, and there goes the whole hundred-point lead. When these guys would get around to settling up, they'd reach in their pocket and pull out rolls of hundred dollar bills a couple of inches in diameter.
I said to myself: Someday I am going to be wearing a silk suit, with a roll of hundreds in my pocket.
Now there are kids today saying: Someday I am going to be sitting at the keyboard in my Jockey shorts, with XG installed on an overclocked PC with i7 chips.
But it ain't the same.
