Checklist of when to break an anchor

As you asked for a "general approach" to deciding, here is the "checklist" that I use and teach to determine when to break an anchor:
1. Race--the more you are up the more you should think about racing.
2. Timing--who is more likely to break, crash, or leave a shot first.
3. Enemy board strength.
4. Your own board strength.
5. Enemy's ammunition to attack remaining checker.
6. Diversion: does enemy have checker on the bar? does he have blots in his board? Do you have blots in your board?
7. How good or bad is the alternative play?
8. Cube, gammon, and score considerations that might affect the play--who has greater risk in a hitting exchange? Will one play get you the cube and another not? Will one play allow you to give the cube if you are success on the next exchange?
