Agreed that baffle boxes eliminate many problems. But an even better solution is electronic dice:
Advantages of electronic dice
- No cocked dice
- No dice dropped on the floor
- Dice don't get in the way of checker movement.
- No tailgating -- the dice won't let you roll until the other side is finished.
- No accidentally moved dice or disagreements about what a previous roll was.
- Fairer to players with poor dexterity.
- Simpler mechanics. (You could integrate the dice with a clock so that buttons to "Double", "Roll", and "Pick Up" also start and stop the clock.)
- The biggest advantage of all: Speed. Electronic dice would cut at least 4 seconds off of each roll ... every roll of the game, every game of the match.
Disadvantages of electronic dice
- It's an additional piece of equipment you have to buy and bring along to tournaments.
- Some people would miss the tactile and aural sensory enjoyment of playing with real dice.
- Suspicions of nonrandomness. Physical dice are more transparent than electronic dice -- you can see the little cubes bouncing and rolling around. With electronic dice, it's just a black box. Some people simply won't believe the results are random.
