This year we will be having 3 backgammon tournaments in New Zealand rather than the normal one. And we have decided to do our utmost to encourage new people to come along. Here's how we have gone about it:

the 1st contest will be an online contest where players have to play one match a week. There will be no entry fee and no prize money. The idea is simply to encourage everybody to have a go. It will be a round Robin so everybody gets at least 5 matches. While this is going on we will be advertising the 2nd backgammon contest which will be a live one in May and the New Zealand Champs in June. Both of those contest will have $25 entry fee to cover expenses, though if we do not get the numbers we expect Tony and I may end up footing the bill. There are players who want to play for a lot more money so we have decided to have 2 side pools were people who want to can play for higher stakes. All the players will be evenly distributed amongst the general pools but if I enter the Hundred dollar prize side pool and I come 3rd in the contest but nobody in the Hundred dollar pool comes higher than me then I win the side pool. Each side pool will be divided between the 1st and 2nd place. I don't know if I have explained that very well but it means you can still play quite cheaply if you want to or you can play for significant money if you want to. We always make the 1st day a round Robin so that everybody gets to play lots of backgammon.

The really neat thing about those contests as I am only having to organise one of them which is fantastic.
