It's a New Year; Let's do Something New - ABT points distribution

Trying to change anything in the ABT will be met with great resistance, largely because of the history and how the points affect overall, long-term standings. Also, the ABT is not an organization where people can make changes because they want them...its simply not going to happen. (I know this from 30 years of trying to get even very small changes made that would improve ABT events.)
But the value of your thinking is something I completely agree with. More people than just the few who win a lot need to walk away feeling good about their experience, and they need to be rewarded AT LEAST with some points recognizing that they won a few matches before getting knocked out. Hell, why not some points just for coming? (I have also felt the money is too top-heavy as well, but that's not going to change either.)
So if the ABT points and money aren't going to change, then the other way to "reward" for performance is either with the USBGF point system (and there is no reason why there can't be some financial reward for attendance, good sportsmanship, for junior players, for bringing in new players, or whatever to encourage the growth and values we admire).
There is also no reason why the ABT can't keep the system they have now but have a secondary bonus pool of points and possibly money to reward more players.
On a similar subject, I have always believed that the Intermediate Division should be kept separate...have it's own point system and rewards so that at the end of the year you can have an Intermediate Champion and a top 20. Part of that would be to allow a player to stay in Intermediate for an entire year no matter how much he wins so that he has a reason to try to win the whole thing and the bonus money, and of course that would also encourage several other intermediates to come to more events to have a shot at one of the top spots.
Again, you are butting your head against the wall to recommend changes to the ABT, but ideas to make more people enjoy and come to tournaments and to give more people a feeling of accomplishment instead of just the few who are likely to cash are valid, and if you want to see tournament grow and be more successful and you want to keep more people coming back, these ideas need to find a way to be implemented somehow.
