OK - you don't need to switch if you don't know what is in the first envelop, because your payoff is the same no matter what. It is true that if the switch gains, you win an amount equal to what is in the first envelop, while if you lose, you lose only half, but that is exactly compensated for by the fact that when you gain, the expected amount in the first envelop if half of the amount when you lose.
