I suspect that a novice or intermediate player would lose less equity if they employed the optimal immediate doubling strategy that you described in 1994, than they would lose if they were to delay doubling in hopes of obtaining that elusive theoretical position that has 1a 2a Crawford equity without having been preceded by any market losing sequences.

Wouldn't be surprised if more than a few open level players wouldn't benefit likewise. Just a hunch. Can't prove it though.
