Is SurveyMonkey a better tool for gathering and measuring opinion?

From the other side of the pond I've found these recent threads to be quite interesting but also more than a little confusing.

Are specialist sites like SurveyMonkey better scientific tools for gathering and measuring opinions?

Here is an experiment I did some time ago on preferred backgammon clock settings:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TZ6LS3G

and the results (which I found quite illuminating):

Backgammon clock settings survey 2015 v1 wj from Wayne Joseph

I have found that resulting analysis and general consensus is far clearer and easier to interpret through this method.

Over my years of reading BGO, I have noticed that informal 'survey' threads on various contentious issues tend to flare up, plateau, fizzle out and then resurrect every couple of years.

They seem to generate lot of inputs and suggestions but then they peter out without offering any clear resolutions or agreed-upon actions at the end of each very long thread.

I don't want to jump in with my two fat feet so perhaps somebody else might think it worthwhile to set up a similar SurveyMonkey page for the 'dice on chequers' issue. Or not.
