Stick, you are missing a point here. If I had made the same mistake, picked up my dice first and forgot to pick up the checker, my opponent's would not be put into the position of having to decide whether to be lenient or not. I would simply say, "Oh shit!" and play would continue, and if anyone on the other side were to suggest that they should let me pick up the checker, I would thank them and refuse. I would not let them do that, and I am sure if someone on the other side suggested it he would get some grief from his partners.

So my point is, you came up with a scenario that would not happen. If I break the rules and should be penalized, I do not expect, ask for, or WANT mercy. I respect the rules and I know that if we allow "some" rules to be applied partially, we will not be able to draw a line at which other rules will not be applies partially.

I am not just saying this...and I don't have to give examples, because anyone who has ever played with me knows I believe in clear rules and I hold myself to a higher standard...if you don't do this, how can you hold anyone else to a higher standard.

Now, if I was playing with a fish who made a mistake like this, and it was a heads up game, of course I might be lenient.

Why don't you ask MCG what he felt about the situation. He wasn't very happy with me when I insisted we compromise. He said the same thing I did, that if he made the mistake, tough shit, you live with it. That's the rules.

And as for what goes on in chouettes, I have played in some $1 and $3 a point chouettes and yes they are all about having fun and social. Our chouettes are a combination of social and for real money, and one of the ways we keep it social is by having clear rules we live by and insist all live by. Before Jake and I wrote out clear rules and made sure they were agreed to by all who play in the game, we have a hell of a lot of major arguments and disagreements. We have far less now because at least the rules are clear and cover most everything.

We have a big disagreement that day because there were some people in the game that didn't respect the rules or understand how unfair it would be to allow someone to break rules, and because there are so many people like you out there that like to prove they are a "nice guy" by letting people get away with stuff. I think you are a nice guy (I know, I am an exception) and I think Neil Kazaross is a nice guy because he won't let a guy put his own checker on the bar, and I understand why you and Neil and others think that is nice and the right thing to do. But I happen to think it hurts the game to allow players to pick and choose which rules to apply and it causes more problems. Anyone who breaks a rule and asks for or expects mercy is a baby in my opinion and is not willing to live up to his responsibility.

If my opponent is late for the match, he should get a penalty point, and he should not expect me to help him get out of it. But he might think I am a jerk for taking it. Too bad. I didn't cause the problem, and if I were late, I would expect a penalty point. And if he grabs the doubling cube, he better double. That's the rule. I respect the game and the rules. Where do you draw the line if you start picking which rules to ignore?
