I'm not a big fan of the dead cube rule - I do dumb things over the board all the time and most players won't make this mistake more than once. I don't see anything inconsistent with enforcing Crawford and not having this rule.

One other thing you mentioned - putting your own checker on the bar - I'm not sure this has been cleared up under the new rules when not playing legal moves. To me the only allowable illegal moves should be mismoving by 1 or 2 pips due to miscounting or more likely misreading the dice. (ok also moving correctly but not picking up a forced hit checker). To me all other illegal plays are irregularities not illegal moves. But I don't think the new rules address this except by strongly recommending legal moves (which I always play when I can).
