In Response To: They disagree with me (Stick)

I never thought I would ever say or type those words. "Stick is being modest." How can that be, you might ask? Stick is known for many things, but "modesty"? This could be a first in the history of the forum....in the history of backgammon.

Now, I will explain. We were at Jim Pasko's home Tuesday night at a little get together Jim and I host before or after most Vegas tournaments, playing PaskoGammon Chouette, props, and then poker.

I am not going to embarrass those who spoke up so strongly that this position was a pass, but they were amongst the best players in the world and while I didn't speak up, when they all said big pass, I just assumed they were right and didn't question it....until Stick spoke up and said he would take this. They not only disagreed with Stick but I think if we weren't about to start the poker game this could have led to some sizable bets and props. Stick held his ground against some pretty strong opposition from some heavy-duty dudes. Again, I won't get specific about who said what but we had the likes of Falafal, Svobo, Pasko, MCG, Sax, Akiko and myself and others in the room and no one else sided with Stick.

Now I will say that I didn't hear anyone, including Stick, suggest that this might not even be a double. I don't have time to do a full rollout but XG is saying no double here but a bunch, and that shocked me.

This position is a testimonial to Woolsey's Law. Almost everyone was at least unsure of the take and most were sure it was a pass, so in spite of XG's analysis, it is certainly right to double this over the board as most will pass. Stick has never fit into the category of "most" and while I still have a very high regard for those great players who were on the wrong side of this, Stick just moved up a couple of notches on my Giant voting, which I am going to be filing today as they passed out the voting sheets yesterday.

BTW my partial rollout says it is a blunder to double and a .226 error to pass.

As long as were are talking about going against the crowd, at the tournament yesterday, someone asked me about a position I posted on Facebook. He couldn't believe or understand XG's play. I got it wrong over the board and most who responded on Facebook, again, including some big names in the game, also got it wrong.

I pulled up the position and a crowd gathers as I showed it and I let everyone guess what the play was. Even with the quiz factor no one got it right. Then I showed the right play and several said xg was nuts. Just then MCG walked up and I cleared the analysis and said, "I bet MCG gets this right." The very fine player who brought the subject up bet me $20.

MCG looked at the position for 15 seconds and said he only saw one play, it is was THE CORRECT PLAY. I collected the $20 and am happy to say that for the first time in 10 years Genius finally made me some money instead of costing me money (though I did beat him at Pineapple Bluff Gammon later last night.)
