There are some probabilistic arguments being made that don't make sense to me.

1) You say "Here we are at the end of a long match and if the players are close at all in skill the winner will almost always be the player who got the luckiest in that one last game."

I agree with that. However with your proposed rule it is also true that the winner from that point will almost always be the player who get's luckiest from then on. I will give you that it does indeed increase the more skilled player's chance of winning the match once it has gotten to that point. But can you quantify by how much. That is crucial because

2) You say to account for the possibility of 2 extra games you can play to a score which is 2 less.

A big part of why you want the rule change is to increase the skill of the game but the lower point total which may be needed directly counteracts the benefit you seek. My guess is that the lower point total would be the more important factor.
