Popularizing Backgammon

I am with you on this completely. In college, I got addicted to duplicate bridge. I walked into the student union at the University of Texas at Austin and the most beautiful girl I had ever seen was playing bridge. One week later, after reading a book on it, I joined the game and was there 3 days a week playing with her.

One of the reasons backgammon got so popular in the 70's is that we saw Playboy bunnies sitting in front of boards.

Aside from the attraction aspect, the point is that I totally agree with you....many of my frat brothers were addicted to poker, gin rummy, hearts, bridge...we had Risk games with teams that played continuously for a month. If I had been introduced to backgammon back then, I know I would have been addicted then (I was in college before the backgammon boom.)

I am certain that if we put together an effort to set up backgammon clubs in colleges, just like chess clubs, it would be well-accepted and thrive....it does in Japan.

The question is, who is going to take the time and effort to do this? How? Sponsorship would be fantasitic...but who will sponsor it.

I would certainly be willing to give some of my time to help set up clubs here in Chicago...but I'm not sure how to get it done. Maybe we need to learn from the chess club people?

I am NOT PESSIMISTIC or "realistic" like Stick....I think backgammon could really take off with college kids, and maybe even with high school kids.
