Popularizing Backgammon

Backgammon is not slow and laborious compared to Chess. I often wear a Backgammon T-Shirt to Chess tournaments as a low level advertisement for the game. The last time someone said something to me about the shirt, there was a brief conversation. The conversation was about how many Chess players were lost to Backgammon in the late seventies. The person recounting this story did not see the loss is a good thing. It sounded like he was talking about the surviving the fire bombing of Dresden. Backgammon stole a lot of Chess players during that period. Many of them are still with us.
I think that there are many Chess players who would be ripe for a change to Backgammon if it was presented well. I recall MCG's account of his own coversion on this site a year or two ago. He talked about how impossible it would be to climb the Chess ladder and how he was already "too old". There are a lot of reasons to switch from Chess to Backgammon. It could happen again with a little effort.
