The 2nd move

Whenever you lose the opening roll and then toss a 21, 41 or 51, you are losing the race. Your opponent has rolled at least 3 pips and has the 4 pip advantage of winning the opening roll. You have at best six pips and therefore face a racing deficit or 1 pip or more. Since you are losing the race, slotting with the ace is a natural candidate play on the second move. More often than not, slotting is correct.
