1. Does GNU 2-ply, or for that matter GNU rollout, really know what it is talking about here?

I agree with Daniel, No and No.

It's my theory (that no one else seems impressed by), that in positions like this, the number of legal moves (for Blue) is so large the bots just can't sort through them to come up with what is really best. It may also be true that these position types don't come up often enough in the training cycles, so the move weighting just isn't very good.

So you need to use your best human instincts and not worry about the bot's bad guesses. Do normal things like build primes from the back, stop big doubles, look for root numbers to jar a second blot loose, etc.
