I am surprised that the conventional wisdom still says to punt in this situation, because not only do you win very rarely with this "punt and pray that we get the ball back with a new set of downs" strategy, but it's just such a pathetic way to lose. Most often the other team gets a first down or two and you just have to stand by impotently as they run out the clock. You'd think people would get sick of that outcome and decide that they're going to go down in a blaze of fourth-down glory instead, but I guess this like everything else can be explained as a matter of the coach's job security.

I'm curious, though, what the absolute numbers are for win% in the two scenarios. Sure, there's an 8% difference, but from what to what? It sounds like I'm actually guilty of overestimating the sheer hopelessness of punting.
