Even if an NFL coach has the intelligence and desire to go for it when it is right, they must also have the thick skin, like Belichick, to withstand the abuse they will get from the fans, the media, and possibly and more importantly their employer when it fails. Obviously most are missing something that is required. Most have not had the success that Belichick has had either. (emphasis mine)

I think his success and the associated envy that elicits in both present and former colleagues and some members of the public in general contribute to the abuse.

If a journeyman golf pro pulled out of his driveway, hitting two trees and a fire hydrant, and subsequently more/less admitted to marital infidelity, would s/he have been on the nightly news every night for the past week?
