I don't know if it is right, but here's the rationale:

If the onside kick works, PGH is pretty much a lock. If it doesn't then Green Bay will score FASTER, so PGH will have more time left to score again. Pittsburgh is assuming the other side will score anyway, if they start from their 30 or his 40.

Was this a 'surprise' onside kick or was it obvious from the way the lined up?

Curious what Zeus thinks. I bet it's not a big error, if one at all.
