I agree with Bob. I don't think this was a error in failing to know the rules. He just got excited and grabbed the ball too soon. And it WAS a surprise attempt, which came close to being successfully executed.

The best one I saw this year is where the kicker basically kicked it straight forward on one bounce, and his teammate caught the ball out of the air like a pass, 11 yards in.
