In Response To: Which anchor? Why? (Jeremy Bagai)

In Backgammon Openings, Nack/Paul discuss the concept of hitting and turning an offensive builder from an asset into a liability. We can elaborate on that concept, here. White's asset is her blockade offered by the 8 and 9-pts which, in turn, provide the last line of communication for the checkers on the 20/21-pts. Given the quality of her asset, she can leap into the outfield with little risk and consolidate her communication and positional threat. This would seem to indicate that her defense is more of liability than an asset and requires immediate attention. If blue were to lock up the outfield with 24/18 22/18, white's asset would be neutralised; the role for these checkers on the 8/9-pts would be one of attack but she is no where near in position to pull-off a successful attack without it being detrimental to her defense.
