If anyone has any suggestions as to what they'd like to see, then certainly I'm open to suggestions.

Here's a crucial suggestion: whatever you do, if you alter backgammon, it has to be SIMPLE. There was a set of rules posted here for a chouette tournament, and it was hopelessly complicated and loaded with inconsistencies.
