There is a purpose for every rule....

My approach to rules has always been in concert with your view. I first ask why a rule exists and was written as it has been. Then I try to continue that sentiment if I think it still applies.

As Bill points out, when Jeb, Phil, and I attempted to write a more concise rule set we emphasized the importance of the two contestants agreeing after each game on the score. Taking Barry's subthread into account, as long as they agree, in some metric/language/standard, then disputes will be minimized. After that any issue is just closed-minded semantics.

Interesting to find parallels in other sports/contests as has been done here. Baseball, basketball, football (all kinds) aren't even in the same ballpark as they aren't played to a goal score. Tennis comes to mind.
