Have you seen Justin’s rig? He has a PVC framework that might lend itself to stretching a semi-transparent cloth across the top, just above the camera. Such an awning might be the easiest way to block unwanted overhead light. I first mentioned this idea above.

No, but what you say makes a lot of sense because diffusing the light source (with an highly transmittive cloth awning) should take care of the problem. Nice idea!

BTW, I mentioned increasing the angle of reflection but then I recalled Brewster's angle which the following plot shows the optimal angle of reflection -- where the best rotation of the perfect polarizer will completely eliminate reflection, in theory:

For polystyrene (which I'm pretty sure is what modern precision dice are composed of), the Brewster angle is about 58 degrees.
