Chuck Bower: Here "arithmetic mean" and "average" are the same.

Perhaps in colloquial usage, but if we want to be precise, Colin is quite right. Average is a broad term indicating a statistic that can refer to several different things, most typically the mean or the median. I've never actually taught a statistics class, but if I did, I would never use the term "average" when I really meant "mean."
