Gauche and déclassé envelope of crap

Because, rightly or wrongly, giving a gift card is considered acceptable and giving cash is considered gauche and déclassé. Mostly rightly...

The idea behind a gift card is that you've at least taken the slightest forethought and expended some slight energy to get a gift.

The idea behind giving cash is that you simply don't give enough of a crap about the recipient to do more than throw your hands up in the air on the way to delivering the foul envelope you've filled by taking the second it took you to reach in your pocket and pull out a big "fuck you".

For some major life events where money is understood to be of paramount concern, cash, checks, bonds, etc are not only acceptable but are welcome - bar/bat mitzvahs (moving to adulthood and, historically, nearing the separation from parents), wedding (where couples need money to build a life together) and similar ones.
