Giving cash in the wrong circumstance is a faux pas.

The ideal behind a gift card is that you actually know your recipient and have taken the time to get them a gift card that they will use, while not handing over cash. Often, people give thoughtless gift cards and then they are worse, in many ways, than cash. Ideally, you buy them a gift that shows you actually know them and that they want, need or one from which they will get use.

But, yes, Bob if you are going to be thoughtless and really want to show your "friend" how good a "friend" you are put cash in an envelope if you were going to instead give a random gift card that they will never use.
