I suspect that the first idea is just shifting luck around. A player who is lucky enough to get a good blitz going has become much more lucky.

The second idea is interesting and there are a bunch of interesting questions about it. For example in an even race is it better to own the doubling cube or cancel cube? What if it is a lopsided race?
