It is clearly better to correct the position a.s.a.p.
Agreed. I think the ABT rules don't mention that because it is assumed everyone knows it.
It is also better to have the game played from the correct starting position.
The ABT rule allowing 5 turs is too optimistic. How those expert players -that failed to set up the board properly- will remember what happened in the last 5 turns?
Note that the ABT rules allow you to fix an error in setup only during the first two turns of either player. (5th roll starts player 1's third turn.) It is usually pretty easy to figure out what the error was.
I know if I discovered on my second turn that the position had been set up wrong, I'd be pretty disappointed not to be able to correct it.
