You asked for feedback. It is easy to sit back and criticize and make recommendations, but overall it was very exciting. In Chicago we were having our monthly tournament, and I brought my laptop, and we all stopped to watch the end of the match and were constantly updating everyone in the room during both of the final matches. Clearly Monte Carlo has the attention of the entire backgammon community.
Of course the streaming could be better. Of course we'd love to be able to hear Falafel's commentary; of course it would be great to see the XG eval along side the board; of course we'd rather not have commercials. But I am sure in time these things will come to pass.
As for the format, the double-elimination with the fighter's bracket is wonderful, but it did seem kind of strange that after all these long matches, the champsionship is decided in an 11 point match. Maybe the last two matches could both be to 15? I would certainly think that is not too long as to drag it out but long enough, given the importance, to reduce the luck factor a little more.
I was rooting for both. As an American and friend of Doug's I wanted to see him win; as a human being who loves the game, seeing a wonderful, courageous, attractive young lady become our champion is something all of us had to be at least a little happy to see. Akiko is also a good friend of mine, and someone I respect both on and off the board, so I am very happy for her. She is a fitting champion.
Clearly backgammon must completely accept the fact that Denmark and the US now have a third power, and that is Japan. England, Turkey, Germany, France and Iran show great promise for the future, but we all must work harder if we don't want to see Backgammon become dominated by the Japanese in the future....Akiko might not even be the best player in her own home!
