Understand that it is debatable how much luck should be taken out of the game and I suspect that many would stop entering the big tournaments if rules changes swing far in that direction.

Given though that it is one's goal the biggest change would be to use variance reduced results. Using PR results has been tried and is a similar idea that I think is inferior for several reasons.

If one does not want to go that far I think the time can be used in a better way. Require all matches to be clocked so that a schedule can be adhered to. Some like that MC has longer matches than almost all other tournaments but I think that a Swiss format of say 9 or 11 pointers with 4 losses needed before elimination would do a better job at getting a top player as winner.
