I can't say I fully understand this play, and I would probably have played 18/10 13/9(2) OTB. However, I have seen positions with a similar flavor before. I categorize this sort of position as "running with big doublets." When you have the opportunity to run with big doublets in the early game, it can often be worth it even at the cost of leaving a significant number of shots simply because the gain is so great when you get away with it.

Normally, though, for a play like this to be correct, there has to be some other tactical thing going on like duplication. I don't see any duplication here, but I suspect that there are some tactics hidden in the position. To ferret them out may require going through all the rolls to see how they play after 18/10 13/9(2) and after 24/16 18/14 13/9. It also couldn't hurt to do the usual thing of playing around with variants to see how robust the play is to small changes.

As for rolling it out with higher settings, perhaps neilkaz can volunteer his fast computer since he seems interested in this position. (Although if XGR++ is misplaying the position...)
