In Canada it really depends on what level you are at talking about. Local bonspiels are usually entry fees paid by the players. At the provincial level and national level they are usually televised and there is heavy corporate sponsorship of these events (like Scotties, Ford Canada, Home Hardware, M&M Meat Shops, Suncor, Syncrude etc) with significant added prize money(or other prizes). Here in Canada Curling is very popular and televising it is also crucial in growing the game.

What I will admit though is that Canadians take the game far more seriously than many nations (I said many, not all).
