I like Mike Clapsadle's idea, where the number of side events you can enter is limited--especially if you are still alive in the Main or Main Conso. For example, a player would have to choose between speedgammon and seniors/juniors, if still alive in the main; otherwise they could play in both.

A milder variant of this is requiring that no-one can enter long-running, big-drawsheet continuous entry/re-entry events side events (including even the Quickie, if there is one) that are expected to keep adding players throughout the tourney, unless they are out of the main event. The most common event where this would apply is the seniors.

If they're alive only in Last Chance, I wouldn't sweat it. The matches are shorter there, and a lot of people forfeit anyway, so it doesn't tend to slow the rest of the events to a crawl.
