ABT events pay enough places as it is. I am very opposed to paying more places than we currently do. It is nice to actually win something relevant when you do place.
Lets look at a few formats.
1) Standard elim/conso/LC. These for 64 players typically pay 1st/2nd/3-4,conso 1st/conso 2nd and LC first. Is paying 7 of 64 players enough? Well consider that often this bracket is run with lots of byes since there's very often not 64 players for this event. So often maybe 7 of 50 players are payed.
However, Vegas often results after Thurs (you typically have two chances to win a match (buy back) to qualify) in a bracket of 64 and Howard pays 10 places. I think paying 10 places in a bracket of 64 is the absolute max and when there's clearly fewer than 64 players, fewer should be paid. Lynn in NY I think runs Howard's format and pays similarly. NY wasn't nearly as big as Vegas, and yet, Lynn paid 10 places. I find this too diluted. Carter won a major event with 49 original players and only received 14.52 ABT points. Ray just won the well run T in DC. That T paid 5 places (the right amount IMHO for 34 players) and Ray got 13.6 ABT points which is almost as much as NY paid for an event 45% larger. DC isn't too diluted, but with all due respect to Lynn and staff, I think NY is too diluted and that Lynn should consider paying a couple fewer places unless there's almost 64 players after buy backs.
2) Novi DE. The bracket of 96 only pays 9 places. However, lately there's only been abut 75 to 80 players. Would you like to pay more places? Well, then as the DE method goes, you have to pay 13 places and that would seem to be too many unless the bracket of 96 is almost filled.
3) LA modified DE. Patrick now pays 9 places out of a bracket of 64. I do not think that is too much but had no problem when he payed 7 places instead. However, it is also needed in LA to speed up the event slightly since it is a DE event that plays out over only 2 days. Patrick did consult with me a couple years ago about his desire to pay 9 rather than 7. Note that LA often has almost the full 64. I also think that Patrick may have a DE bracket for 48 that pays fewer places.
4) More Swiss (or similar). Both Rory and Jeb consulted with me a couple years ago about their desires to pay more places in their long More Swiss events. I'd been pushing for a full Swiss elim format for a decade and Rory and Jeb finally did it. While I do understand their desires to pay those who are 7-3 or better, I still find my original 8-3 to be the spot where you should get paid (assuming 40+ players).
I'll go back to 2011 and look at More Swiss events concerned mainly with Open. (I might miss one or two small ones I can't recall).
2011 Chicago 8-3 or better got paid. 58 players 7 paid. That is a good amount.
2012 Chicago 8-3 or better got paid. 64 players 8 paid. Just right, IMO.
2012 Pittsburgh 8-3 ..59 players .. 7 paid.
2013 Chicago 7-3 get paid. 58 players 11 paid. Sorry, Rory, I do think that this is paying too many players and prefer less dilution esp. considering that some players fly in from far away countries.
2013 Charlotte 7-3 get paid in Open. 38 players, 7 paid. Advanced (pays 6-3 or 7-3?) 26 players, 8 paid! I'm sorry Jeb, I really think that you paid too many players, esp in Adv.
2014 Chicago I think Rory want back to 8-3? 63 players, 8 paid. Just right!
2014 Charlotte 7-3 paid. 39 players 8 paid. Adv, 21 players 7 paid. Once again, I think this is paying too many players.
When I mention dilution of the prize pool, I need to mention how much more costs are taken up by hotels now than a decade or more ago. Hotel costs continue to rise and hotel tax rates are sickening. LOL, my taxes for my room in Texas for 6 nights were slightly more than 1 night's room rate. That means about 17% tax! We need to win a decent prize when we place.
My apologies to anyone I may have offended. I seek only to advise to improve the experiences and to hopefully enlarge our ABT's. I do realize that my experiences and beliefs may be different from those of others. In closing I want to thank the directors for the very difficult job that they do.
