Could there be a large backgammon tournament with no money prizes where the prestige of winning was enough to draw many top players? My guess is no. Why does that work for bridge though?

Two possible answers.

(1) The reason backgammon tournaments need cash prizes is that backgammon tournaments have always had cash prizes. The reason bridge tournaments don't need cash prizes is that bridge tournaments have historically hadn't had cash prizes.

(2) Backgammon tournaments are dominated by men. I'm not sure I've ever attended a BG tournament with under 90% men in the Open division. Tournament bridge is played by about 50% women. Maybe men need to gamble more than women.
