Sports doping (way off topic)

I appreciate your candour, I really do. However, it has thrown me into a rather cynical frame of mind...
Just imagine if it was legal for 'professional' athletes to be pumping themselves full of anything they liked, what sort of elite sporting landscape would we create? Are we creating (have we created) it already because high level sports doping is a norm?
If so, and it might take some time, one starts to wonder whether we progress to a 'team' of scientists behind a genetically preferred 'lab rat' (the athlete) becoming the true sporting idols. Sounds like a good theme for a dystopian society sci fi story. No doubt that story has been written already.
A science nerd becomes a sporting hero? Nah, not going to happen in my lifetime, so I guess some of us will stay pretending that the Lance Armstrongs' of this world actually deserve the praise that society reaps on them. Having heard Lance Armstrong speak (lie with conviction) a number of times, I believe he does not believe he did anything wrong, except maybe.... get caught.
