In Response To: My take on the Giants list (Matt Cohn-Geier)

The results of two experiments is not enough to say that it will almost always be within a certain small percentage especially since one is more likely to hear about the times it worked.

Here are a couple more examples that I have done with my geometry class.

i) Which is larger the circumference of a soup can I held up or its height? Say how much longer (e.g. circumference = 1.8 times height). 16 students guessed too low a value for circumference and one was pretty close. No one guessed too high a value for circumference.

ii) How many solo cups of water will it take to fill a frisbee (size used for ultimate) with water? The actual value was about 4.5 Every single person guessed a value too low with most saying from 1 to 2.

I think the wisdom of crowds idea is overstated.
