If you were more familiar with variance reduction then you would probably reconsider. It is not based at all on what move you choose is a key feature. Suppose you are playing a variance reduced match against a donkey like stick and want to make a move that you know is theoretically inferior but you think is practically best to win the match. In an ER contest you probably shouldn't make it. In a VR reduced contest you would. Just make the play to win the match, even taking into account practical play. No other nonsense such as delaying an optional double or playing a bearoff a certain way to avoid forced moves in the future (For example if have 110001 and roll a 61 playing 6/5/0 leaves 110000 and a possible non-forced play next turn).

David Montgomery wrote a nice article about the basics. http://www.bkgm.com/articles/GOL/Feb00/var.htm
