Do we want fun or speed?

Everyone has their own definition of what is fun, and everyone has their own reasons for playing in a chouette. I have played in chouettes in every major city in the US, and I don't believe there are any two where the rules are exactly the same!
Ask Malcolm Davis what his definition of a fun chouette is, and he will tell you that it is one where there is NEVER consulting. By the way, I really like that myself, as I think it's really fun to watch the partner's faces when the captain forgets to hit and everyone gets gammoned.
I have never played in a chouette that wasn't for money, and that's part of the problem with the "social" aspect of chouettes.....when you mix money with social, you have immediately created a mutually-exclusive venue, and there will always be a push-pull between the two. Some say the more you play for, the less social the game, but I don't find that to be true at all...our $100 chouettes are generally more gentlemanly and pleasant than our $25 chouettes simply because the participants are generally more experienced gamblers who take losses and partner errors more in stride.
There is no right answer...it depends on what you like. Personally, I would simply not play in a chouette without the Jacoby Rule, and I would not play in a chouette where there is consulting before the cube because there is already more than enough bickering and discussion later, and to argue over plays when the cube is at 1 just isn't worth slowing down the game that much.
