Hand-recording matches

I think the most important thing to do is to come up with a method that doesn't require you to think too much, and is unambiguous.

I've never hand recorded a match in a big tournament... I'll do it now and then for practice matches. Of course, I've recorded a few matches played by others.

Nactation is a fine idea, but it has made almost no headway whatsoever in seeping into my brain, so I don't bother with it. I'm sure if I knew it, it would make things faster, but all the Nactation geeks out there probably don't realize how confusing it seems to most people. Notice that I didn't say it IS confusing... but that it SEEMS confusing. That's enough to turn people away.

My method: I'll write down the roll and then just write destination points, as you've done. Many times, the destination points alone make the play unambiguous.

I use superscripts to indicate that multiple checkers get moved to the same point. So a roll of 33 played 8/5(2) 6/3(2) would be noted 33 52 32. I underline a hitting play. So in your example, 64 played without a hit (24/14) would just be 14, but with a hit (24/18*/14) would be 14.

Maybe once or twice a game I have a play where the destination points alone would be ambiguous (often with small doubles). When in doubt, I just go with the full notation.

The one thing I can say for sure if you're recording a match is to make sure you record the roll correctly. If you record the roll correctly but the move you record is ambiguous or nonsense or illegible, you can almost always work it out later. But if you record the roll wrong, it can be a real headache.

The advantage of what I do is that it's universally understood. I was once asked to record a match, having never done it before. I recorded it, made up most of this notation on the fly, then just gave my chicken scratch to the guy, and he transcribed it with no problem.
