In Response To: Hand-recording matches (Matt Ryder)

Matt, although I do not think your position is ridiculous, and some directors might (reflexively?) opine that any tool (like a pencil!) is an "aid" and therefore banned, or, perhaps they might think it better to bar self-notation in order to avoid possible disputes and suspicions, a more appealing position to me is that (once again) the rule is not written as perfectly as could be, and should not be read literally. As TD, I would not object to a player manually recording his own match if clocked. So I would read the rule to mean, I suppose, that players are unlawfully "using" written, mechanical, or electronic aids when they are using them for unlawful advantage, including (with a pencil) counting pips, figuring match equities, and the like, but not notating a match. One could argue that I am reading "except to keep score" as if it said "except to keep score, or to notate a match if clocked" (and I do think words to that effect in the rule would be an improvement) but I think I would respond/rule that I don't believe that writing down a match with a pencil is "using an aid." That is, a prohibited "written aid" includes books, match equity tables, and the like, but not the self-notated transcript of the match in progress.
