Good foundation for a world ranking system!

Thanks for the data, Daniel!
I view this data as a good foundation for a world ranking system. To enhance it to make it a true world ranking, I advocate:
1. Have the Master points system adopted by the rest of the world.
2. Include data for the past five years (when this becomes available).
3. Weight the data so that the current year carries a weight of 5; last year 4; previous year 3, etc.
4. Exclude people who haven’t played in a specified number of tournaments (eg. 10).
5. Display data for the top 1000 people.
6. Update the list every week.
7. (optional, suggested, more controversial) Consider awarding master points for more than just cashing … but not just for showing up. I believe only the top 10% or less in a tournament currently win Master points. It’s too hard to win Master points. I learned that in Bridge Master points start to be earned once you win a few games.
I contend that if such a system were put in place worldwide backgammon tournament attendance would rise significantly. People would strive to get on the “top 1000 list”, and also they would feel that the tournaments were fairer … reduced incidents of sandbagging at the intermediate and novice level.
Kudos to the USBGF for collecting the “tournaments entered data” and displaying this points/tournament data. I’m currently not a member of the USBGF, but I’m beginning to like what you’re doing and will reconsider.
