My own take on the topic is simple but not particularly encouraging. If backgammon is to become popular, a lot of money has to be poured into it. Big-money tournaments on TV is a key trick that poker used; something similar could be done with backgammon if there were enough money available. There unfortunately isn't a direct equivalent to the poker trick of showing the audience the hole cards, but I don't think this is fatal. The main problem is, where is all that money going to come from? Someone has to be willing to take a large short-term loss for the chance of long-term gain.

If there's enough buzz about it and enough money made at the top levels, then people will start getting curious and will develop respect for the game. It doesn't matter if people don't understand in any detail how to play like an expert as long as they can grasp the game at some level and can be convinced that there is such a thing as expert play.
