Poker is better for TV for several reasons:

1. Poker is simple and everyone can understand it. Every hand is a new game; channel surfers can easily pick up what's happening. While the rules of backgammon are simple, understanding a particular position and what the players are trying to do is hard.

2. Poker moves at a slow pace, suitable for TV. Backgammon is just too fast -- viewers can't keep up.

3. Bluffing is a big part of poker so cameras focus on the player's faces. That's where the drama comes in. Backgammon broadcasts focus on the board, which is boring in comparison.

Poker is bad for TV in that a lot of the time nothing exciting is happening, but this is fixed with editing and adding entertaining commentators.
