I'm not sure it's that simple. Somebody has a possible interest in bg, then discovers that - if they want to be really good at it - somewhere down the line they must learn to do all this number crunching and/or learn boring tables of numbers.

Fine - if they're the kind who know they'll never aspire to be better than second rate at something. To others, suddenly this rather charming game they'd discovered doesn't seem quite so enticing, after all.
