No, I think you and Stick and JOH all miss the point.

There are plenty of positions where I do exactly what Stick suggests. Those are positions where I have a ballpark understanding of what's going on but am off by a little bit (a "little bit" meaning a whopper or a whopper with cheese, 0.1 or 0.15). But if I'm off by over 0.5 then a patient computation is just GIGO. It's like pulling out a band-aid when I've had my leg blown off by a hand grenade. I have nothing against first-aid kits but it's the wrong medicine for the trauma at hand.

Over the past five years or so, I'd guess that my PR has dropped by about three points. So I know a thing or two about what kinds of learning strategies work for me in what situations. One has to know what kind of remedy to apply to a particular problem. This applies to teaching as well, since you mention it. Too many teachers just pull out their stock answers without being able to adapt to the situation at hand.
