It depends on what rules are in effect at any given tournament (or even event within a tournament) as the rules vary. The "ABT" rules from which Stick quoted are actually formally named the US BACKGAMMON TOURNAMENT RULES & PROCEDURES. But these rules do not necessarily apply at all US tournaments nor at all ABT events. Numerous different rule sets are used at tournaments outside the US.
